AHP6 SESSIONS
AHP6 Parallel Break-out Session 7: Protected Areas as nature-based solutions to Climate Change
23 October 2019
9:00-12:00
Muong Lao, 1st floor, Champasak Grand Hotel
Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) is defined as “the use of biodiversity and ecosystem services into an overall strategy to help people adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change. It includes the sustainable management, conservation, and restoration of ecosystems to provide services that help people adapt to both climate variability, and climate change.” Protected areas, in itself, is already an indirect effort for climate adaptation and mitigation. They offer various ecosystem services that provide essential needs and protective functions to nearby communities. As such, putting a premium on protected areas and natural ecosystems not only bring about ecosystem stability but also promotes social equity in light of climate change challenges.
The session will feature presentations from various sectors at different levels to provide an overview of existing ecosystem-based solutions being practised in the region, and further perspectives on the role of natural ecosystems in adaptation, mitigation, and disaster risk reduction. These should inform the AHP managers, and the relevant stakeholders of the potentials of protected areas in contributing to EbA practices and enhancing their management efforts to capture potential EbA co-benefits in protected area management.
